Bio-medical waste NOC

Bio-Medical Waste Authorisation/NOC

  • Biomedical waste authorization is a permit granted by the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) or Union Territory Pollution Control Committee (UTPCC) to HCF (healthcare facilities) that generate biomedical waste.
  • The occupier of a healthcare facility has the primary responsibility to segregate liquid chemical waste and biomedical solid waste at the source.
  • This means that the occupier must ensure that the biomedical waste is collected and segregated into different colored non-chlorinated plastic bags (yellow, red, and blue) according to the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016.
  • The biomedical waste must then be handed over to a Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility (CBWTF) or a biomedical facility.
  • Both healthcare facilities and CBWTFs must obtain a biomedical waste authorization certificate from the SPCB or UTPCC to operate.
  • In simpler terms, biomedical waste authorization is a requirement for all healthcare facilities that generate biomedical waste. It ensures that these facilities are properly segregating and disposing of their biomedical waste to protect human health and the environment.
